Mr. McGrath goes to great lengths to explain some of the differences between New Atheism and what he calls their fundamentalist beliefs, and (regular old) atheism. One can certainly see parallels in this work of how the Christian church branched out over the centuries and how over the past few decades Atheism is doing the same. Perhaps this is an evolutionary trend that atheist tend to hold dear.

Adding a genuineness to the book is the fact that Mr. McGrath has publicly debated many of the more well known and respected people in the New Atheism movement. In the first five chapters of the book, the author carefully expounds on what New Atheism is, the main themes of the movement

The book may have been a bit clearer if the author had not briefly talked about a subject and then stated that he would go into more detail later. I prefer linear explanations when reading a book like this, but do not fault the author because the content he produced is very full. All in all, this is an informative, and I believe important read for people who are serious about understanding the thoughts that are directing the people involved in the New Atheism movement, and the arguments against it. I especially liked how the author ended the book-it was charming.

Thomas Nelson publishers did provide a free copy of Why God Won’t Go Away in exchange for my review.

Valerie A. Unfortunately, this statement cannot always be applied to the human race. Too many people do not receive a blessing from their parents or other loved ones. In fact sometimes our wishes and thoughts turn into nightmares when hurting people are unable to be a blessing to others-especially children.

John Trent and Gary Smalley recently revised and update their million plus best-seller called “The Blessing”, which was originally written 25 years ago, to help people understand what being blessed looks like and how to bless others. This book is especially geared toward parents with children. Ideally, all parents would use this as a …realistically this does not always happen, so we are asked to take the Blessing Challenge, which calls for each adult to be a blessing to one child utilizing the five elements of a blessing described in the book. These five elements include:

· Meaningful Touch
· A Spoken Message
· Attaching High Value
· Picturing a Special Future
· An Active Commitment

The authors are careful to discuss each element in practical detail. They also talk about people that grew up in homes without being blessed, single parent households, and reversing curses that may have been spoken to or about you. Helpful advice and steps to overcome negative self-images and behaviors are freely given. The authors have also set up a nice website at TheBlessing.com to join with others in learning and participating actively in the blessing. There are video messages that correspond to several chapters and other links to help individuals walk out the blessing!

Valerie A. According to the authors, militant or extremist Islam is responsible for the majority of the terrorist acts over the past 30 plus years. The book offers a fairly balanced, hard hitting presentation of facts regarding terrorist acts, ties to Islam, the world and now America. I don’t agree with every statement, but a good portion of the book is quite persuasive.

The book brings up an important point. Why are more Muslims not outspoken against terrorist acts? In the spring of 2011, a pastor who aligns himself with the Christian religion went to Dearborn, MI (one of the most populous Muslim cities in America) to demonstrate against Islam and specifically to ask Muslims to denounce the call to sharia (Islamic) law in America by some Muslim factions. It so happens that this Pastor a few weeks earlier burned a Quran in his home state of Florida. This man was met in Dearborn, a suburb of Metro Detroit, with very vocal demonstrations by Muslim and Christians alike. Why did Christians join in these demonstrations? Because, the actions of the Florida Pastor were deemed as wrong, therefore his message was deemed as wrong as well. Using the same basis, why then don’t more Muslims leaders and people demonstrate against terrorist acts such as subway bombings in England, and gunman rampages in the name of allah (Islam’s Diety) in Texas? Not coming out against extremist acts, gives the appearance that more Muslim people support these acts.

The book is easy to read and thought provoking, while not denouncing the Muslim people. The authors go to great lengths to repeatedly state that they do not believe that all Muslims are terrorists or that all terrorists are Muslim. America has changed since the attacks of 9/11, and Mr. Bennett and Leibsohn have a very interesting viewpoint on the changes that are not typically discussed in mainstream media sources.

Valerie A. The new book titled “Max on Life” brings real life questions from real life people that the author elegantly dares to answer.

There is a vast array of different heartbreaking and thoughtful questions submitted to Max for his response. Some questions include: “Does God allow war? If so, how do we reconcile his commands to love our enemies?” “I don’t like the narrow-mindedness of Christians. It is absurd to say that Jesus is the only way to Heaven.” And “Our Son (16 years old) was diagnosed with mental illness three years ago. We have prayed without ceasing for God’s healing. But healing has not come, and the atmosphere in our home is becoming increasingly tense. Should we keep praying for his healing or just accept that he will never be healed?”

Mr. Lucado is transparent in his responses about God’s love and mystery while giving raw, gut-level, honest responses to some really tough questions and statements. This book is unlike any other that I have read by the same author. It is timely and discusses some hot button topics such as homosexuality, unanswered prayer, and struggling with negative economic conditions. This book provides answers and insights for seasoned Christians and people who have no experience with Christianity.

Valerie A. The person presenting the non-Christian view is called X, and the person presenting the Christian view is called Y. X starts each topic and subtopic out and then Y subsequently responds with his own view point. Both sides present evidence to prove their case.

Generally, I like a good argument, but the majority of the points X & Y used were flimsy at best. Too much of the so called evidence was used in the context of the cultural preferences at the time. In many of the cases both parties used cultural norms to prove their point, and the norms quoted were from the same culture during the same time period. In other words their points contradicted each other even though they were talking about the same culture at the same time in history. This seems unlikely. X & Y did not fully prove their points beyond a shadow of a doubt. I am neither convinced nor unconvinced by what I read in the Jesus Inquest-the proof just was not definitive enough.

What is of particular interest to me is that the topic of Jesus being the Christ is still as hotly debated as it has been since the time of His crucifixion and subsequent resurrection. During the Easter season, people can be more curious about Jesus and His life. If you are seeking more information I humbly suggest you read the biblical accounts of Jesus’ life. Reading the Gospels offer the best chance for understanding Jesus the Messiah.

Valerie A. I have often pondered about the context of this Love. Are we supposed to be patient and kind all of the time-with everyone? If so, how is that humanly possible? Sometimes questions like these keep me awake at night. I recently found a great tool, Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index, to help me find some answers.

I looked up the word “Love: on page 304 of the index. The word study of Love was a nice benefit, which quoted related scripture for further review. Next, the meat of the reference tool became apparent. Under the word love are four different headings:

1. Christian Love
2. The Love of Christ
3. The Love of God
4. Physical Love

Under each of the headings are topics such as-“The First Commandment, (Love) toward others, and (As Seen in believer’s) daily lives.” Scripture are associated with each specific topic in order to delve deeply into each topic, person and place mentioned in this index.

By the description of the book, I thought I would get a physical workout from the weight of the book each time I picked it up to find deeper meaning. I must say that I was disappointed initially when I opened the package and realized the neighborhood’s stray cat could carry the book in her mouth like one of her kittens. Nevertheless, once I began reading this treasure trove of information, the size no longer mattered. The content packs a powerful punch. According to the Publisher, Thomas Nelson, (Which gave me a free copy of the Index in exchange for this review) Nelson’s Biblical Cyclopedic Index has more listings than any other Bible resource available, and it combines the features of a concordance, a topical Bible, and a Bible dictionary. I have not read the entire publication-yet. A reference book of this caliber needs to be slowly savored like the most decadent of desserts.

Valerie A. She squeezed her eyes shut in an attempt to measure how safe it might be to get out of bed and face the world head on. Halfway listening to the morning news, her heart was gripped with pangs of fear as she placed herself as the main character in every scary situation mentioned-a house fire on the lower east side, another ex-wife murdered by the estranged ex-husband, and another bank went belly up over the weekend. She just did not want to get out of bed and face more possible stress today. She pulled the covers over her head determined to just push it all away-for at least the next 7 minutes until her alarm went off again.

If your comfort zone ends two steps from your bedside, then this book might be for you. If you have felt afraid about world events, or even events happening in your neighborhood or family, then this book might be for you.

Living with Confidence in a Chaotic World. What on Earth Should We Do Now? written by Dr. David Jeremiah is not his first foray into writing about difficult subjects. Dr. Jeremiah’s New York Times Bestseller, What in the World is Going On? Written in 2008 is considered the preeminent guide to end time prophesies.

In his newest release, the author does an excellent job in spelling out some of today’s biggest fears and how to overcome them in a biblically based, practical manner. Natural disasters, economic decline, and poor health are all taken from the headlines and are open for discussion and viewed through a biblical worldview. This book contains ideas and helpful anecdotes that tell us how to live valiantly while we are waiting for the return of Jesus the Christ to the earth.

At first glance I thought the neatly framed two word chapter titles were a telltale sign of the superficiality of the book. I was wrong. Each chapter demonstrates the represented ideal in depth. The chapter titles and topics include:

1. Stay Calm
2. Stay Compassionate
3. Stacy Constructive
4. Stay Challenged
5. Stay Connected
6. Stay Centered
7. Stay Confident
8. Stay Consistent
9. Stay Committed
10. Stay Convinced

The author gives real life examples, and offers encouraging scripture to help us in our everyday situations. The chapters are easy to read and have personal stories where people were able to overcome their fears, but not always their circumstances-which are true to real life. The book is a good read. As always, make sure you check the bible references on your own.

Valerie A. As expected, Mr. Lucado’s poignant ability to get to the point and weave in personal real-life stories is as effective as ever.

In this age of self-help-pull yourself up by the boot straps society, this book is a breath of fresh air. The statistics the author uses show that the typical American family is very well off when compared to millions of other people around the globe. This is not to say we do not have our share of problems. The fact is-if you own a home and a car then you are considered to be in the top 5% of the world’s richest people.

The book is easy to read. Make sure you have a lot of time to read because once you pick it up, you won’t want to put it back down until you are finished. The book is broken into 16 chapters that are typically around 10 pages each. The chapter titles give you a sneak peek into the topic that will be discussed and include: Let God Unshell You, Team Up, Open Your Door; Open Your Heart, See the Need; Touch the Hurt, and Persecution: Prepare for It; Resist It.

In typical Lucado style, he uses personal stories, and scripture to drive his point right through your heart. It is sad, encouraging, heart-breaking and thought provoking at different times throughout the book.

It is well-known that many families throughout the country are struggling financially. Some have lost homes, and jobs and other belongings. The author shows that it does not take that much for us to truly make a difference in a life if we are willing. On page 105, the author makes what I believe is a very applicable and profound statement considering the current political climate in the country with the Tea Party, Democrats, Republicans, Green Party and more vying to prove that their party is superior and can make things better for our country. Outside of the help of Jesus Christ, no party or recovery plan is going to make a significant enough difference globally to change the lives of so many people in need. Mr. Lucado’s profound statement mentioned earlier is: “Scripture endorses not forced communism, but Spirit-led volunteerism among God’s people.” For those who may be concerned about our great country becoming a Socialist nation, remember that God told his people several times to sell all of their possessions and give the money to the poor. That sounds like re-distribution of wealth to me.

While you are looking at page 105 let your eyes wander over to the previous page and look at the comparative chart between Dadhi and Max. Two people from very different geographic locations with quite similar characteristics are reported. The book is filled with examples of what Max (quoting Bono) calls an “Accident of latitudes”, which show how lives can be so very different based simply on the region where one is born.

Outlive Your Life illustrates a timely message that if taken seriously by even 25% of God’s children, could affect the lives of so many hurting people around the world.

Disclolsure-I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com <http:>book review bloggers program. As a book reviewer for Book Sneeze, and Thomas Nelson publishers I have reviewed quite a few books and believe that the “Butterfly Affect” is well written and well intentioned. The author is able to pull together excellent elements of storytelling that capture the reader’s attention with a sense of mystery and awe.

The story about Colonel Chamberlain and the Union Army during the battle of Gettysburg is inspiring to say the least. Mr. Andrews' ability to weave one person’s life into another and show the effects that simple and tremendous acts have upon others is very thought provoking. The stories of simple everyday people who do courageous, and extraordinary things is beautiful

This easy to read book is entertaining. The author gives us challenging life sayings such as: “Every single thing you do matters. You have been created as one of a kind. You have been created in order to make a difference. You have within you the power to change the world” These tid bits are true to some degree, but I disagree with one of the author’s ideals.

We have been created by God the Creator to make a difference. If you believe that Jesus Christ is God and accept Him as the only true path to God, He will dwell within you according to John 14:16. The power to change the world that is within us is given to us from the Creator. Humans are not the Creator and do not by ourselves outside of God have the power to change the world. The author speaks of the generations yet unborn that will be affected by what we do today-very true, but not entirely true. The choices we make do affect others. Continuing in abusive or addictive patterns can have untold painful effects upon future generations. Investing in the right company at the right time may have untold benefits for our children and grandchildren. One important point that is missed in this book is that God is the author of our story, not each person alone. The Lord God formed each person according to Psalm 139:13. Everything we do matters, and it is for a higher purpose, which He chooses.

This book is so beautifully written; perhaps that is why it is so disappointing to me that the author chose not to distinguish the importance of God lovingly and painstakingly watching over every aspect of our lives. He makes each person out to be their own individual god by claiming that we possess the power to change the world. The one and only true God loves us so much and tells us in Proverbs 16:9 that “We plan the way we want to live, but only GOD makes us able to live it.” In addition, 2 Corinthians 3:5 states: “Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. We have our roles and dreams and goals. God empowers and gives us the competence we need to reach our goals for the good of others.

Valerie A. I was not interested in reading a fad diet book, and am grateful that Mr. Wilson did not try to sell his audience a flimsy, nonsensical self-help guide that leaves one feeling hungry and frustrated. The author of the book lost 230 pounds and 24 inches from his waist and has kept it off! Initially I thought it was too good to be true. However, the author offers practical alternatives to the processed food most of us have become too accustomed to. Another nice point is that these foods don’t cost an extra arm and leg at the grocery store.

I thought it was only fair to try this diet/lifestyle change myself. I would like to lose several inches from my waist and about 20 pounds that I have not been able to looses since childbirth an embarrassing number of years ago.

One of the things that I believe makes this eating plan doable for the average person is discussed in chapter five called-“Conquering Cravings.” Most diets have us ignore our cravings, or try to be super strong-willed to overcome the Twinkie urges. Most people can do this-for a little while, when the cravings become too much, we tend to cave into them. However, the author talks in detail about meeting your body’s craving for carbs, or sugar through healthier options such as fresh fruit for sugar cravings and legumes or beans for carb cravings. It actually seems to work. I craved sugar quite a lot prior to starting this new diet plan and have found that the fresh fruit is a great alternative. I also really like the idea of eating as much as I want at the large meal in the middle of the day (rather than in the evening), but have noticed that I am eating less now than when I started the diet.

The shopping guide that is included in the book is very helpful. After my first shopping trip, my kids asked me if I thought I got enough beans. I guess I did not have to get every variety available. The recipes are very do-able, and so far they have been tasty too. The author was right about ground turkey taking on the flavor of beef when mixed together in meatloaf and/or chili. I make substitutions when needed. For example for the homemade cream of mushroom soup, once I used broccoli instead of mushrooms

Besides the yummy elephant ear I ate today and the smore and Oreo cookies I had last week while camping, I have been careful to follow the suggested menu items in Let’ s Do Lunch in order to give it a fair try. I am pleased to let you know that after one month I have lost five pounds and two inches off my waist! I really see this as a lifestyle change and plan to continue the plan.

P.S. my teens are also on the Let’s Do Lunch plan and seem healthier and like the food. Our junk food cupboard is mostly bare now, but they seem to enjoy the fruit options almost as much.

Valerie A. Most prime time T.V. programs portray men as bumbling idiots that need a woman to help them put the toothpaste on their toothbrushes correctly each morning. Author John Eldredge revisits his manuscript ten years after Wild at Heart was originally published and gives it fresh updates and offers years of additional experience he and other men around the world have gained over the past decade. John is an awesome storyteller. The author’s ability to utilize real life stories, and integrate his feelings of success and failure as well as point people to the heart of God is unparalleled in the publishing industry.

Mr. Eldredge notes that a man’s soul needs three basic things throughout his life in order to thrive. These include:

1. A Battle to Fight
2. A Beauty to Rescue
3. An Adventure to Live

These core needs will take different shapes and forms throughout a boy or man’s life, but they are essential to a man’s ability to live the life that God created for each man. Men actually long for these things, but often do not realize it. Unfortunately men and women alike will often turn to less wild lovers, such as pornography, drugs or food to fill the deep needs that are going unmet. Practical guidance, scriptural truth and real-life examples make Wild at Heart a must have living field guide for every man.

Valerie A. Pastor Wilson’s approach is honest, heart wrenching and refreshing. The author asks what we do when God does not show up the way we thought he would.

Like Shakespeare’s question of To be or not to be, Pete asks-what will we do with our Christianity when we walk through extreme situations? The Pastor utilizes relevant biblical examples such as David and Joseph and their very real life trials to help us see that God is still with them. Could this mean that God is still with us in our painful situations? The author thinks the answer is absolutely! In fact, the author that at times God orchestrates difficult circumstances in our lives in order that we would choose to grow closer to Him.

Author Pete Wilson is a pastor at Cross Point Church in Nashville who is able to combine biblical and real life stories from his life and lives of others to illustrate how to respond to life changing and challenging situations.

The book is easy to read and is just over 220 pages and has a discussion guide in the back. I highly recommend that everyone get the book, not just people going through a trial. Eventually, we all deal with difficult situations and can benefit from the wisdom presented in Plan B. The hype surrounding the supposed destruction of the world in 2012 has given author Raymond C. Hundley PH.D. a very hot topic to write about. His new book titled “Will the World End in 2012?” is well written and covers ten of the major theories regarding the possible destruction of our civilization as we know it.

The author is able to discuss in a non-biased and entertaining way the Mayan calendar prediction, solar storms, Nostradamus' predictions, Super Volcano eruptions as well as the less heard of conspiracy theories such as the collision with Planet X and Earth’s destruction due to the alignment with the Galactic Plane.

Many cultures throughout history have been curious about the earth’s total destruction. Mr. Hundley consults experts that specialize in specific areas such as the Mayan culture as well as scientists that provide arguments for and against the theories. Some of the potential predictions have some scientific merit and could very well contribute to our planet’s demise.

The book is written in simple to read language and each major theory has a chapter of its own with a story from the author, facts about the theory and expert testimony for or against the stated facts. I would have like more detail surrounding each theory, but understand the author’s desire to keep these extremely complex topics simple.

Of great value in the end of the book is an explanation of how to be prepared for the end of our lives, whether it happens in 2012 or fifty years later.

Check out the Publishers site for more information on the book.

Valerie A. A true underdog story. Isaac Newton’s determination and strength changed the scientific community forever. Sir Newton was a Christian, who according to this biography had a real relationship with Jesus Christ that shaped his thinking and behavior. The central theme of this book is about a man who loved to learn.

The book is written in chronological order which gives a detailed look at a truly gifted person’s life from birth to death. Interestingly, Isaac Newton was born on Christmas day in 1624-the same year that the famous scientist Galileo died. We are able to understand how his family dynamics and childhood affected his desire to learn. Mr. Newton’s tenacity in his teen and young adult years as well as his desire to learn throughout life helped him through difficult periods later when colleagues disagreed with him and attempted to discredit his work.

Isaac was an amazing person who educated himself through childhood and even as a student at England’s famous Cambridge University. Mr. Newton’s depth of understanding in chemistry (Then called alchemy), math, religion, astronomy, history, and languages seems unprecedented in history. According to the book description, “He built the first reflecting telescope, authored the book that became the basis for classical mechanics, and wrote the three laws of motion,” which are still taught today. The author, Mitch Stokes, does an excellent job of writing highly technical information in layman’s terms so that it is understandable and reads very easily.

This book has re-inspired my desire to learn more about the world that God created.

To purchase a copy go to Thomas Nelson Publishers.

Valerie A. George Foreman certainly has lived a wonderfully varied life of poverty, fame and wealth. In George Foreman’s autobiography titled Knockout Entrepreneur, Mr. Foreman offers his sage advice on life and running a business.

Mr. Foreman’s practical advice and no-nonsense style have a lot to offer someone just starting their own business or a seasoned business person. The author certainly practices what he preaches by repeatedly giving the full name of his most famous and best selling product-The George Foreman Lean, Mean, Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine! The book is quite a good marketing tool for the Foreman machine, as well as Mr. Foreman himself.

The chapters are easy to read and are in a logical order. Thankfully the author did not prescribe 7 easy steps to success as too many non-fiction books do these days. He repeatedly talked about how hard work got him to where he is today. Too often people are afraid to share their failures, which is a big mistake because much can be learned from understanding what people did wrong, as well as what they did correctly in their circumstances.

In my opinion, Knockout Entrepreneur is a big hit.

Valerie A. This new book by world renowned author Max Lucado is a soothing balm to a world filled with fear, anxiety and worry. The nightly news is selling fear. Just turn on any one of the 24 hour news channels. We have the swine flu epidemic, the economy, violent crimes, and a host of other terrifying events that can keep you awake all night! In classic Lucado style this book examines the root causes of fear, and the only real solution to it-Jesus Christ.

Mr. Lucado examines scriptures diligently in order to provide more than sufficient evidence for the claim that Jesus does not want us to fear. In fact the gospels are chock full of examples, which, Max helps shed light upon with updated current real life stories as well as utilizing his uncanny ability to take us on the dusty roads around Jerusalem to walk with Jesus as his disciples did. Most people will be able to relate to the way author presents story after story about how Jesus affected calm amidst the storms of life.

Max Lucado does not sugarcoat the truth either. This book is no name it and claim it, if I can only imagine my life will be perfect type fiction. The entire basis for the book is the fact that Jesus is to be trusted especially in challenging or mind boggling circumstances. Times are tough now and they will get worse. God tells us so in his word. On page 153 the author writes “ Sitting on the Mount of Olives, in full view of the temple and the City of David, Jesus issued a buckle your seat belt, no kidding; life can be fatal to your health warning.”

It was comforting to read the description of when the disciples nearly fainted with fear when they saw Jesus glorified during the transfiguration. Peter, James and John literally fell to their faces thinking that was the end of them. Jesus in all of his loving mercy came over and touched them and told them to not be afraid. The fact is they were afraid. Jesus recognized this, and did not condemn them-he came to their side to reassure them. Mr. Lucado also recognizes that we have a lot to fear these days. Fear is a normal human emotion, but it is optional. As the author points out-Jesus is there amidst the fear telling us not to worry, don’t be afraid, and trust Him.

Trust Him. He is our firm foundation, our ever present help in times of trouble. Hard times are a part of life. We can live life well in our tough circumstances. As the author points out in multiple ways, God is in control. Everything that we experience is sifted through His loving hand.

The book chapters are segmented into different topical areas that people fear most such as: Fear of Death, Fear of not mattering, Fear of violence, Fear of not having enough (Money) and several other relevant topics. The in-depth discussion questions and suggested scripture at the end of the book help add depth and volume to another Lucado Classic. Fearless is a very enjoyable, and encouraging read.

Valerie A. Dr. Crabb warns us early on that he is moving slow and goes to great lengths to provide a firm foundation of his beliefs. The introduction describes why people are losing interest in church, and what makes a gathering a church. Section I discusses why people should go to church and three answers that do not work for Dr. Crabb. Section II explores what kind of church we should want to go to. Finally, section III states what type of church the author wants to be a part of.

I doubt that it is merely a coincidence that I began reading this book in the midst of one of the ugliest experiences that I have ever had with fellow churchgoers. The situation was not handled well at all levels. Initially, I thought that it might not a good idea for me to read the book, because it may cause me to want to leave my church in search of more desirable circumstances. It did not. It did however help me want to confront my own self-redemptive strategies in this situation and other areas of my life. Real Church gave me real hope that God can and is changing me into the woman He wants me to be, and reminded me that He is very well aware of what is going on in His church.

The backbone of this book is written in the introduction where Dr. Crabb points out “Christians in community (Churchgoers) should be and could be the most potent force on the planet for personal transformation, for powerful evangelism, and for cultural influence, not mainly through political clout and certainly not through moralistic judgment but through offering a different kind of love than most people have ever seen or felt-a wise love that speaks with power into where people live.”

The depth of thought and emotion which this book brings to the surface was both surprising and very encouraging. Don’t mistake Dr. Crabb’s book as the next church “Movement”, formulas for obtaining God’s favor, or a list of things to do in order to have an effective church ministry. It goes much deeper than those ideals. This book should encourage every believer in their lifelong walk with God. Statements such as: “Does going to church help people want to know God more or use God more?” Or, “Spirit of God let me hear the music of heaven with the ears of my soul. I never want to mistake the gospel for reasonably good news” drive home the point that life is all about living to please and worship our God.

As a whole this book is excellent. It does take a little time to make the most promising points, but it is worth wading through the early sections that do help bring a lot of clarity to the later chapters. Dr. Crabb is an author that seems to honestly deal with his humanness, and is humble enough to bring his imperfections to public attention. His style of writing and openness helps to normalize our lack of enthusiasm and sometimes utter contempt for formalized religion. It also helps to draw us closer to our Maker.

Valerie A. The elegance and simplicity with which he writes is as near genius as I have ever seen. No one can hammer a point so quickly and softly as Max (as if I know him personally) can.

"His Name is Jesus" is a compilation of some of Mr. Lucado's previous wonderful works. Even though I have read many of the books quoted, it still does not dissapoint. The artwork is incredible. The layout is fantastic. The best part is that the book describes in great detail different phases of Jesus' life. The previous works point to " His Birth, His Mission, His Death, His Resurrection, His Legacy. I thought he was being too picky and lacking grace especially toward people in the faith movement. The continued overuse of one or two statements throughout the book created an appearance of having something personal against certain teachers in the faith movement. For example, the author uses one example of Joyce Meyer blaming Job for his losses-ad nauseaum throughout the book. I got the point. Mrs. Meyer was rude and inconsiderate and said something stupid. A mistake most of us humans make. Mr Hanegraaff's repeated use of that same error-did not really justify any of his points.

I am interested in the truth, so I kept reading the lengthy book and to my astonishment found that the author is on to something-something big! I checked his footnotes and references and had several different bibles at my fingertips as I continued to study the book. The author gives tremendous insight and has a great ability to compare and contrast what faith movement teachers are dishing out vs. what God's word really says.

We can not create alternate realities with our thoughts or words. As claimed by some in the faith movement and New Age propaganda books such as "The Secret." To prove the point-Try to change your computer screen into a bowl of oatmeal by believing and speaking it out. Did it work? Of course not. Metaphysical change is not real. It does not work. We cannot speak and make something happen in our favor.

There is no magic formula in this life. Matthew 6:33 says "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (NIV) The things referred to in this scripture verse are food, clothes, and material possessions as noted in Matthew 6:25. God wants us to look for a real relationship with him first. He is not Santa Claus. We should not submit a list of things we want and then expect him to deliver them. I once heard a pastor state "I have tithed all of my life, and I still don't have everything I want, but I have everything I need. Yes, God takes care of His people but we will not all live in plush mansions. I love the point the author makes about none of the prosperity preachers being on the Forbes 500 list! Why not? If their principles really work shouldn't they all be the richest people in the world?

Life can be tough, we can work really hard for decades and watch as the stock market plummets and takes our life savings away. My sister got laid off last week from a company she worked with for over 18 years. A few months ago a colleague who is past retirement age was fired without cause. Loved ones get sick and die, no matter how hard we pray.

Christianity In Crisis really helps to illuminate the Truth. The "Back to Basics" section is invaluable and a must read for every Christian. The Apologetics appendix is an eye opener and something that should be taught in every church to every believer.

Like the faith movement teachers say-"Check it out for yourself, don't just take my word for it!" Do check out the Bible for yourself. Don't let anyone deceive you or misrepresent the Holy word of God. The good Doctor takes an inside look at the brain and its specific mood functions. Over the past decade Dr. Henslin has worked closely with well-known Dr. Daniel Amen, author of "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life." Together they help people utilizing a revolutionary brain imaging method called SPECT that can pinpoint potential problem areas in the brain such as Attention Deficit Disorder, depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Actual photographs of brains that have gone throgh a SPECT scan powerfully demonstrate healthy brains vs. brains that has problems in a specified area.

Because the brain scans themselves can cost anywhere between $1,500-$5,000, a very useful self-test is offered in chapter four, that may help to begin to identify potential problem areas. The author then takes the time to explain specific, and most of the time easy to implement changes to help remedy potential problem areas. I appreciate that the author utilizes various methods such as nutritional supplements, medication, aromatherapy, foods, cinematherapy, scripture, and humor to help with whatever ails you. Dr. Henslin goes to great lengths to treat the whole person and not just the problem.

The book goes into detail about the five mood centers in the brain. Thankfully, you won't need a medical degree to understand the down to earth terminology used to explain this complex subject matter.

The author uses very helpful tables to explain how different areas of the brain control every day functions such as organization, empathy and emotional control. The table then compares how the healthy mood center functions and how an unhealthy mood center may function.

In addition, personal stories about real people who have struggled with over or under active mood centers helps make this book more real. Sometimes issues like depression are caused by a chemical imbalance, or a result of poor nutrition or wrong thought patterns. The author covers all the bases in a practical and helpful manner. I highly reccomend this book for everybody to read. Even if you don't have a brain issue, you probably know someone who does. This book could help you to better understand your loved ones.

Valerie A. It is not one of those name it and claim it...think happy thoughts and everything will be ok kind of books. Author Dr. Augusto Cury and his highly acclaimed Multi-Focal Intelligence Theory provide a stimulating read in the book subtitled "The breakthrough program for conquering anxiety, overcoming negative thoughts and discovering your true potential."

The book is well written in twelve chapters or 12 "Principles" that include managing your emotions, learn to listen and dialogue, as well as unleash creativity. This is more than your typical self-help book. The concepts are interesting and will be challenging for people to apply consistently in their lives.

Of particular interest is that in nearly every chapter, Dr. Curio, a former devout atheist writes about Jesus Christ, the man and his responses to stress in his own life, how Jesus embraced those who persecuted him, and did not let anything deter him from his life mission. The good doctor studied Jesus's ability to think correctly and his capacity to manage his thoughts in very tense situations. I have never read a book that had the courage to delve into the psychology of Jesus Christ in this way. It is fascinating.

While this book is not written from a religious frame of mind, Dr. Curio embraces religion as an essential part of life.

Valerie A. You will be hooked after reading the first page. The author does a wonderful job of transporting us to a small town set in the late 1940's. After reading this book, I wished there was still a place like this in which to raise a family.

My 11 year old son read the book and could not put it down. He says, "Boomtown is an exciting book that will enthrall readers of all ages. I know I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much I could hardly put the book down, even during school, the teacher had to threaten me with detention and an “academic study skills period” because I was reading my book so much. This book is one of the best books I have read." That says a lot from a young man who reads 5-10 books each week.

The narrative descriptions are magical and will thrill readers of all ages. The characters are rich and engaging even though the story takes place more than 50 years in the past. The jacket cover and the author's pen name, Nowen N. Particular, will have you smiling before you even open the book. At several places in this delightful tale, I found myself laughing out loud. Books like this that catapult one's imagination and plant a seed of hope that things can be better are not published very often.

We highly recommend this book and cannot wait for the next one in the series!

To preview the book go to: http://thomasnelson.insidethecover.com/widget/demo.jsp?isbn=9781400313457

Valerie A. Written by William Paul McKay and Ken Abraham about Billy Graham and his friend and co-evangelist turned atheist Charles Templeton.

This seldom heard tale that could have changed the face of the Western church and perhaps the world is very well written utilizing flashbacks and switching between the main characters as well as different locations.

Part of the story focuses on Charles Templeton and eventually his relationship with the impeccable Billy Graham. Reading about Graham's boyhood faith (or seeming lack of it), his college years and his budding relationship with Ruth Bell was very interesting. I learned quite a bit of detail about the life of one of the most influential men of our time.

the story does not skimp on excitement either. At the point where Billy Graham was working through his crisis of faith-I could not put the book down. Of course I knew the outcome, but the authors captured my attention by focusing on what was occurring in the spiritual realm as well as the sweat and cries of Reverend Graham.

The book offers historical insight and a very well told story about a rather "average" man that through God's strength goes on to do mighty and wonderful things.

I highly recommend this book

Valerie A.
